FIRST AID HINTS & TIPS

Mosquito bites: Apply toothpaste to relieve itching.

Burnt your tongue? Sprinkle a few grains of sugar on the sore spot to alleviate the tenderness.

Electrical cords Check cords and plugs regularly for damage and wear and replace or repair if necessary.

Child Safety -  put a piece of red electrical tape on the hot water taps so smaller children can more easily identify which one is hot.

Child Safety - children can drown in very shallow water and it is essential to keep your eye on them at all times, however fixing netting over ponds and ornamental pools can assist as a preventative measure.

Child Safety - tie plastic bags and dry cleaning bags in knots before disposing of them to prevent young children playing with them and suffocating.

Child Safety - where possible keep doors locked from the inside to prevent children leaving the house. Installing a bell on the door is also good to alarm you of any little ones trying to make their escape.

Child Safety  - Use child resistant packaging properly by ensuring that you close the container securely. You should also store these items in a lock up cupboard or out of the region of children for additional safety.

Child Safety - Do not leave electrical cords hanging in a position where a small child could pull the item down on top of them.

Stuck Pill: Eat a banana to dislodge a pill stuck in your throat. The soft bulk of the fruit will move it along.

For child safety do not have the thermostat on your hot water system set too high. Only have water as hot as is absolutely necessary.

Home made cough remedy; boil a lemon in a cup of water, remove lemon, cut in half an extract juice. To the juice add 1/2 a cup of honey. Take a teaspoon at a time as required. Stir well before each dose.

Home Security. Never leave spare keys hidden under doormats, in letterboxes or anywhere outside your home. Instead find a neighbour or close friend to keep a spare key. Lock away ladders and other tools that could assist in a burglary and install movement activated lights to deter thieves

Minor Burns: Keep an aloe vera plant in the kitchen to treat minor burns. Break off a piece of the fleshy part and apply the juice to the area.

Make sure everyone in the house knows where & how to turn off the mains water in case of a plumbing emergency to prevent water damage.

Medicine Safety - leave the labels on all medications to ensure you do not get them confused and can refer to the dose instructions prescribed by your doctor. You should also make sure that you turn the light on when taking medications to ensure you do not mistake one for another

Sea sickness can ruin a great day on the water, be prepared with travel sickness tablets from your local chemist if you're unsure how you'll go.

Fire: If caught in a fire, remember to drop low as less smoke and heat is closer to the ground. Place a hand against a door before you open it. If its hot... DO NOT OPEN. It is likely that there is fire on the other side.

Teach your kids emergency numbers: Your own phone number and numbers for a close family member from an early age by getting them involved in making the call. Practice with them to 'call grandma' or 'call home'. Have emergency numbers written somewhere at your child's height, 000 along with visual representations of fire/police/ambulance placed on the fridge will help to familiarise children with these numbers should they ever need to use them.

Electrical Storms: Unplug your modem from the phone line during electrical storms as a lightning strike could damage your entire computer and corrupt valuable data.

Use a portable or mobile phone to call for help in an emergency.

AND NEVER FORGET ... DIAL 000 in an Emergency. Dial 000 or 112 from a mobile phone.
